Stress and anxiety can heavily impact the quality of life a person enjoys. Stress can control your interactions with others, impede your ability to concentrate, adversely affect your health and negatively impact your ability to function and be productive. Understanding what causes you stress and taking control of these influences in your life can help reduce the amount of stress you feel.
Our modern life styles are a breeding ground for stress and anxiety. There is an ever increasing list of components that must be constantly juggled into play and delicately balanced. When these elements come unbalanced our stress levels climb. Our financial situations, for example, are a never ending source of stress. When the household finances become difficult to manage stress levels skyrocket. Debt is a major contributing factor to high stress and anxiety.
In our consumer driven economy luxury items provide continual enticement. Commercial goods subtly advertise the promise of emotional fulfillment while promoting feelings of inadequacy. It is no wonder that preventing extraneous debt, which is the best way to avoid financial stress, is also the most difficult technique to put into practice. Good financial planning, which involves a doable household budget for mortgages, utilities, groceries, and other essentials can help reduce the overall stress involved in managing money.
Financial emergencies offer additional strain on the mind and body. Having an emergency fund that you regularly contribute to can increase feelings of safety and security. Persistent budgeting will result in overall reduction of debt. Reduced debt will result in a reduction of anxiety and a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Many individuals suffer undue stress not from their working environment, but from the large quantity of hours they spend working. “Workaholics” often sacrifice time with friends and family to spend more time at work. This creates strain on relationships and increases stress both at home and at work.
A balance must be struck between home and work life. “Workaholics” have to practice mentally separating their home and work lives. While you are at work concentrate entirely on the job at hand. Push family and household worries from you mind until the appropriate time to deal with them. Likewise, don’t drag the stress and anxiety of your working day into your home. Your home is a sanctuary from work and should be treated with regard. By mentally separating home and work lives you can better manage stress and anxiety.
Another common cause of stress is over extending personal resources to accommodate others. Women in particular tend to sacrifice personal comfort to ensure that needs of others are met. Sometimes offering to go the extra mile is not appropriate considering the physical, emotional, and financial resources at hand. Helping others can provide a wonderful catharsis, but overextending your efforts can lead to severe stress and anxiety.
Make sure that you have the tools to successful help others without neglecting your personal needs. It is preferable to say no to friends, co-workers, or family members when saying yes is more martyrdom than caring. Likewise, know when you are in need of assistance and don’t be afraid to ask for additional help. Keep the amount of help you offer and accept balanced in your life and you will notice a reduction in stress and anxiety.
Keep in mind that the rule of balance does not only apply to interactions with others. The weekend warrior knows best the overwhelming feelings of anxiety that come with attempting to finish too many projects at once. The number of projects simultaneously running should be as low as possible. This includes personal development projects like quitting smoking and losing weight. Focus on one task at the time and follow it through to completion without taking on additional activities.
These factors are but a few of the many that can cause stress and anxiety. Discovering what triggers episodes of stress and reducing or eliminating those triggers will prevent stress from accumulating. It is important to take a proactive stance against increased stress and anxiety for the protection of your mental and physical health.
